(Molino di Carpini - Valbona - San Faustino - Moravola - Molino di Carpini)
The estate of San Faustino di Bagnola, of which the Perugian antifascist Bonuccio Bonucci was the tenant, became the refuge and operational headquarters of the first nucleus of what would become the “San Faustino” Proletarian Urto Brigade from 13th September 1943.
Among the promoters there were several officers of the Italian Armed Forces, disbanded soldiers from different areas of the front, who no longer wanted to fight for fascism alongside Germany. Among them the lieutenant of Città di Castello Stelio Pierangeli, later commander of the Brigade with the battle name of “Geo Gaves.”
The rugged landscape, the isolation of the area and the solidarity of the peasants could have facilitated the organisation of an underground armed opposition, but the betrayal of one of the first members of the group led to the arrest, in mid-February 1944, of Bonucci and of his other collaborators.
The opponents, however, were able to reorganise themselves, shifting their sphere of action towards the Pietralunghese. The “San Faustino” Proletarian Impact Brigade was officially established at the beginning of March, gathering mainly partisans from Città di Castello, Montone, Pietralunga and Gubbio in the various bands. Near San Faustino, the territory between the Carpina and Carpinella valleys was deeply marked by war. In the anti-partisan roundup of May 1944, the Germans killed 3 peasants in Caigisti who had no connection with the Resistance. In Molino delle Carpini a teenager, terrified having witnessed his cousin being tortured, was killed by a volley of fire from machine guns as he tried to escape.
During the passage of the front, under the castle of Aries, along the Carpina valley, a grenade killed a young teacher.
Ennio Belardinelli embedded with the allied troops to give them information on the territory, had been captured by the Germans and was hit by shrapnel while trying to escape. Near San Faustino there are also the localities of San Benedetto and Moravola where the draft dodgers of Umbertide took refuge during the winter of 1943-44.
