After celebrating May Day in Pietralunga, the “San Faustino” Proletarian Shock Brigade set itself the goal of disarming the garrison of the Republican National Guard of Montone.
The attack took place on the night of 5th/6th May 1944.Under the cover of night, approached from Tre Ponti, entered the town, surrounded the barracks of the Republicans and ordered their surrender. The fascists realised that any resistance was in vain and surrendered. It was still dark when the partisans decided to abandon Montone and return to their shelters. But as soon as they left the town they encountered two trucks of Germans. Taken by surprise, the Germans were overwhelmed by the partisan fire, although they managed to escape. In the clash, the Montonese partisan Aldo Bologni, was killed.
The risk of a Germanic reprisal weighed on Montone. But Don Mario Vannocchi who knew the German language a little, managed to avoid it.
Montone was liberated on 7th July 1944 thanks to the frontal attack launched on July 6th by the British, with intense fire from machine guns, artillery and mortars. During the night the 1st Battalion of the King’s Own Regiment reached Monte Cucco. From there on 7th July, it launched the decisive attack. Shortly after 2pm Montone could be considered to be in allied hands.
